The collage novels of Max Ernst (1891–1976) are vital additions to the history of visual poetry. In 1925 Ernst executed his first frottages published in his book Histoire naturelle in 1926. His three novels, La Femme 100 têtes (1929), Réve d’une petite fille qui voulut entrer au carmel (1930) and Une Semaine de Bonte (1934) each present a disturbing, surrealist pseudo-narratives assembled entirely from antique etchings.
